What is The Wattle Project?

Let’s be honest, eating disorders aren’t talked about enough. Especially not in rural and remote Australia. That’s where The Wattle Project comes in.

We’re a community-driven initiative dedicated to raising awareness, delivering education, and advocating for better support for eating disorders and body image issues in rural and regional communities. We believe everyone, no matter their postcode deserves access to care, understanding, and support.

Why We Exist

Eating disorders don’t discriminate. They affect people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. But in rural areas, the challenges are compounded by isolation, limited services, and a deep-rooted culture of silence. Many people suffer quietly because of stigma, shame, or simply not knowing where to turn.

At The Wattle Project, we’re working to change that. We’re here to start conversations, provide real resources, and create safer spaces for people to learn, connect, and seek help.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple:
To make sure no one goes without support, regardless of where they live.

We do this by:

  • Delivering education and awareness workshops in schools, communities, and workplaces

  • Advocating for more training and resources for rural healthcare professionals

  • Building a network of Wattle Ambassadors to help spread awareness and support locally

  • Promoting body acceptance and challenging stigma through campaigns and community outreach

Our Values

💛 Compassion – We lead with empathy and heart, always.
💪 Courage – We’re not afraid to speak up or tackle the tough stuff.
🌾 Community – Rural people supporting rural people, that’s who we are.
⚖️ Equity – Everyone deserves access to care, no matter their postcode.
🤝 Integrity – We act with honesty, respect, and a commitment to doing what's right.

Why This Work Is Important

Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. And yet, they remain some of the most misunderstood and under-supported. In rural areas, access to care is even harder. Long waitlists, limited specialists, stigma and lack of training for local health workers all add to the burden.

We’re here to change that story. Because early intervention saves lives. Because people shouldn’t have to suffer in silence. Because rural communities deserve better.

The wattle is a symbol of resilience, tough, beautiful, and uniquely Australian. It’s the perfect representation of the strength within our communities and the hope we’re growing together.

Let’s stand up, speak out, and support rural Australians affected by eating disorders. Together, we can grow something powerful.
